Project Honeypot Http:BL (Blacklist) installed and enabled
To help make this website a safer place for visitors and members we have now also installed the Project Honeypot http:BL (Black List) module. The module checks the IP address of every visitor against the black list maintained by Project Honeypot in real time and, depending on the reputation of that IP address, automatically BLOCKS the IP address from further visits to this site or issues a 'Greylisting' challenge to the visitor.
Since http:BL was enabled less than 24 hours ago, Project Honeypot has already

Altnews Drops ID Requirements
A requirement that members provide verifiable ID to the webmaster to gain 'unmoderated' status on the http://forums.altnews.com.au/ web site was dropped by Alternative News Network today amidst a flurry of confusion, negative and sometimes even paranoid comment from members.

Re: What got you interested in running a site?
What got you interested in running a site?
Well, as the domain name altnews.com.au suggests, back in 1996, I fully intended to build an 'Alternative' news site publishing the important stuff that should have made it to the mainstream media. The web site slogan at the time was: "Publishing collective for the bio-economic region around Cairns, tropical north Queensland, Australia". This was supposed to be a part-time after hours interest adjunct to my fledgling web hosting business.

Free 'Groups' now available on forums.altnews
This Altnews site, forums.altnews now has 'Groups' similar to Yahoo Groups and Google Groups...
Each group can have members, and maintains a group home page where members can post into. Posts may be placed into multiple groups (i.e. cross-posting) and individual posts may be shared with non-members or not. Membership to groups may be open, closed, moderated, or invitation only. Add-on modules are available for group image galleries, group calendars, group vocabulary, group stores, etc.

reCAPTCHA anti-spam module: Digitizing Books One Word at a Time
I just discovered the reCAPTCHA module which plugs into the Carnegie Mellon University's 'Digitizing Books One Word at a Time' project. Wow.
CAPTCHA helps distinguish between human and computer visitors by presenting a challenge only humans can answer. No more automated spam submissions to this site. Hurray.
reCAPTCHA does all of the above but also turns every poster to this site into a volunteer PROOF READER of one of the many books that are being digitised by Carnegie Mellon University.
For more information, visit the reCAPTCHA web site.
