"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged
by the way its animals are treated."

- Mahatma Gandhi

The "Animal Welfare - A Measure of a Nation" Group aims to encourage discussion on Animal Welfare matters in the understanding that by improving conditions for all animals we build a more just, sustainable and humane world for ALL sentient beings.

  • "Because it is how we, as individuals and as a nation treat our animals, so we treat our children, the less fortunate, the poor and the disenfranchised in our midst." - Clemens 2009
  • "What else is it that should trace the insuperable line? Is it the faculty of reason, or, perhaps, the faculty of discourse? But a full-grown horse or dog is beyond comparison a more rational, as well as a more conversable animal, than an infant of a day, or a week, or even a month old. But suppose the case were otherwise, what would it avail? The question is not, "Can they reason?" nor, "Can they talk?" but, "Can they suffer?"" - Jeremy Bentham 1748-1832
  • In 1997 the concept of animal sentience was written into the basic law of the European Union. The legally-binding Protocol annexed to the Treaty of Amsterdam recognises that animals are ‘sentient beings’, and requires the EU and its Member States to ‘pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals.’

For The Love Of An Animal

For me, I know, it is one of the most impossible questions: 'the difference between me and an animal'. This question is in the same category as 'where does eternity end?' (my answer is always: 'I'll tell you when I'm dead'). Please take note: I am not asking the difference between You and an animal. That would complicate the questions even more. Like; 'you smell like a dog'.

RSPCA Qld Connects With Domestic Violence To Help Victims

Pets in Crisis brochureRSPCA Qld and dvconnect Domestic and Family Violence Service of Qld have joined forces to help human and animal victims of Domestic and Family Violence.

In what is already being heralded as a major breakthrough, the RSPCA will partner with dvconnect to help women who feel trapped in violent domestic situations because of concerns for their pets.

“Women often delay leaving a violent relationship because they’re worried what will happen to their pets” said Di Mangan Manager of dvconnect. “Unfortunately refuges are not equipped to take animals and until now women have been reluctant to leave if they cannot find or afford emergency pet care.”

The new Pets in Crisis - domestic violence programme will solve this problem by providing temporary care for the pets of women and children during their stay in domestic violence refuges. The programme will initially be trialed for six months and will hopefully help prevent animal cruelty in violent domestic situations. Many families also feel traumatised after they’re forced to abandon pets when they flee the family home. The Pets in Crisis programme will help ease that trauma of loss.

Media History of Conflict of Interest - in memory of Henry Mayer

Well it looks like I have found my way to this thread. ( miracles do happen). So as not to go off post title: 'Live Export: Passion Drives Change'. Here is a comment you wont read in main stream news.

(Moderator: converted to Blog entry from original comment to Live Export: Passion Drives Change

The truth behind the barbaric Live animal trade and the media is a clasic example why media and all politicians should NOT be allowed to be in a position of conflict of interest.

Live Export: Passion Drives Change

(Moved from comment on forum topic: When A Child Screams Someone Needs To Help)

As it is said nothing changes if nothing changes.

Passion drives change. Awareness is born from people who care and aren't afraid to put it out there, sometimes loudly, some quietly achieving.

I believe suffering exists to teach us compassion, to understand fraility, and to establish our values. What is acceptable, what isn't?
