Welcome to the 2009 Web2 incarnation of the Green Activist Group.

The group was first set-up as the 'Greens-Activist @ altnews.com.au' mailing list, one of the first mailing lists on our servers sponsored by the Australian Greens in 1998. Later, when the Australian Greens set up their own list server, the altnews mailing list was renamed to 'Green-Activist'.

The new (web2) Green Activist Group opens up a wealth of advanced communications options. All posts are now web based and available for discussion and comment to many more readers while sophisticated e-mail subscription options allow visitors to subscribe to all posts in the group, a particular author or even just a single discussion thread.

List your Events, add a Poll or create a Petition to take your green activist message even further.

City of London demands more war and terror to save nature

They said it: The mass death and destruction of war is great for nature conservation, enthused the City of London’s house organ The Economist magazine in its latest edition.

Under the title: “Biodiversity down the barrel of a gun”, The Economist “Green.view” column on 8th February, praises war and terror, and genocide generally, as the best ways to preserve the environment.

Urgent Need To Include Fluorocarbon Refrigerants In The Carbon Trading Scheme.

Sent to all Reps and Senators. Pobably a tad late ... but we gotta keep trying to get it on the agenda.

Dear Members of the House of Representatives and Senate

While Parliament's attention has been concentrated on the issue of reducing CO2 emissions through the Government Carbon Trading Scheme, we tend to forget that CO2 is NOT the only man-made greenhouse gas emission that we have to control.

Would the last person to leave please turn off the light?

Sorry folks, but the news on peak oil isn't good. Perhaps you missed my post on the 12th?

Sydney Morning Herald,
11 Nov 2009, LONDON

The world is much closer to running out of oil than official estimates admit, says a whistle blower at the International Energy Agency who charges it has been underplaying a looming shortage for fear of triggering panic buying. ...

The Coral Sea: Protecting a Tropical Marine Jewel

protectourcoralsea.org.au web buttonTo the east of the Great Barrier Reef lies a tropical marine jewel: the Coral Sea. Its crystal clear waters are home to huge fish that dominate the ecosystem, like lions of the African plains. The pristine islets and cays are both breeding ground and nursery for turtles and seabirds. It is home to a diversity of species from majestic humpback whales to dainty reef fish. Once the arena for the Battle of the Coral Sea, this iconic region now remains a refuge for marine wildlife.

In late 2008, a campaign was launched to protect this near pristine environment in an Australian Coral Sea Heritage Park. At one million square kilometres, it would be the world’s largest marine park. With less than 0.1% of the world’s oceans highly protected, this would be an unparalleled contribution to global marine conservation.

Car Bomb Kills 16 in Afghanistan

Afghan authorities say an Italian military convoy was traveling from the Kabul airport to its base in the city when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-filled car into it, causing a huge explosion.

The blast blew out windows in buildings around the scene in the center of the capital city. An Afghan man who witnessed the attack gave its details to reporters.

He says he saw the suicide bomber driving his car towards the convoy. Foreign soldiers warned him to stop, says the eyewitness, but the driver ignored the warning and then there was a big explosion.

Primrose path to the everlasting bonfire: Turnbull's policy on biochar is a non-starter

I was gob-smacked by the incredible ignorance displayed by opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull, who sees biochar as the answer to carbon capture.

Concerted international efforts on the scale of the Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb during the second world war are needed to develop alternative non-fossil energy sources, not feeble-minded attempts to continue business as usual with oxymoronic "clean coal" to lessen greenhouse emissions and biochar for carbon capture.
