The Transport industry has no friends on either side of politics or any support from our so called peak Transport Industry Associations or the Transport Workers Union;

Having met with the Queensland Transport Minister John Mickel and his senior advisers two weeks before the shutdown it was obvious that we are on our own in this battle to get any changes made in the short term, Liz Schmidt accompanied me on this visit and we made it very clear that the demerit points and increased fines on log book breaches were impacting heavily on the driver population in Queensland and many were exiting the industry, they did not believe that this was the case, they did however agree to look into the ‘spiteful enforcement’ being dished out by Queensland Police, and some of their own officers, they agreed to meet with Qld Police to iron out enforcement issues and to get some uniformity into their administration of the new laws.

I also extended an invitation to the ATA CEO Stuart St Clair to met with me in Brisbane at the same time to discuss the concept of the shutdown and to explain the reasons for this action, he declined the invitation, to this day he and all the Associations still think it was about fuel prices, or perhaps they wanted to believe that, the press from them indicated to me that was their thinking, they are that far out of touch one wonders why anyone would want to be a member of these Associations.

I also met with Hughie Williams at the same time and I thought we were able to convince him that we were not connected to any other group, he gave the impression that he understood the situation and although he didn’t want to support the shutdown he did give the undertaking to pull out his members if we got enough trucks to stop, of cause that support wasn’t forthcoming even though better than 70% of trucks did stop on the Monday, membership there might be a problem for the TWU in the future.

Clare Mildren and I met with the Shadow Minister for Public Transport and Traffic Management Shadow Minister for Trade Shadow Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations Tim Nicholls and the leader of the Opposition Lawrence Springborg, MP after the shutdown finished to find out where the new Liberal National Party stood on the new transport reforms, at that meeting they both made it very clear that they supported the new reforms and would not be repealing them if they win Government at the next election, also in attendance was the Opposition Whip Ian Rickuss, MP.
From here the transport industry in Queensland should campaign against the new Liberal National Party at the next election as we don’t need another change of Government just to get more of the same.

We as an industry can lobby until the cows come home the present political parties will still treat us as expendable, we will need to organise ourselves under the banner of a new Association with a starting membership of Five Thousand to gain the mantle of Peak Industry Group, then we will need to reassess our options.

Until next time stay Safe

Support

Hi Mick, I read your article in the 8/8/08 big rigs and dispute that there are no friends in the political parties. What about the C.E.C.??? They are campaigning for nationalisation of our energy resources right now, press release on cecaust website, your supporters could do worse than to mutually endorse each others' campaigns!!! That party supports a productive and sovereign country, none of the other bloody do!
Also, if you check with the likes of Malcolm McClure of UPMART you'll find that GST is ILLEGAL, so all the companies out there could save that fee right away, all you have to do is challenge its' legality and follow it through.
People in this country are so complacent or stupid and will only question injustices when it really sheets home to them, you truckers are now at that coalface, will you step up or step away? I have suggested the LAW and a POLITICAL PARTY to back up your needs, are gonna do anything to harness these?
Over to yous....

Continue to make your voice

Continue to make your voice heard. Expressing your concerns loud enough and long enough will begin to produce a great amount of momentum. You'll even find others who will also champion your cause. I wish you the best.

A LOT OF IDEAS HAVE TO GO INTO REVERSE

This has and hasn't got anything to do with trucking. We farmers and truckies are all in this together. I don't know how it is going to come about but a lot of ideas and policies have to stop and go in the other direction. We have gone way to far to the right. The idea that bigger and more profit is better is no longer working for ordinary Australians. How Australia will look after the financial collapse of the USA I don't know. The trend will be back to small business and looking after relationships and communities. It seems some in the US would like to stage an oil war hopefully that won't happen. ( I do find it interesting to try to work out in my spare time what the hell is going on with us supporting these crooks in America !) http://worldpressnetwork.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=402

we need a whole outlook

I'm not surprised there is no support from the LNP - they are just more of the same.
A vast array of people across many organizations and associations govt. and private are still only working for big business. They are not interested in helping the small operators or small farmers. I had a man say to me the other day that corporates have increased efficiencies and economies of scale so that is what has to happen. The little bloke can go out of buisness - who cares.
We don't live in a democracy we have rule by the corporation.
America needs a revolution and so do we to get back our country.

Grass root politics NO PARTY POLITICS

There is hope on the horizon, there is a new political initiative called Southern Cross Party, www.southerncrossparty.com
Southern Cross will be a grass roots party where democracy will be the order of the day, check the structure and aims at the top of the web page, we will be starting a promotion of the new concept very soon.

The new Liberal/National Party is not hitting it off with their traditional supporters with membership renewals falling away dramatically, and when you see the LNP turning their backs on the trucking industry you can see why.

The Labor Party is all at sea and floundering badly, they have become victims of the Global warming con and being lead down the path of green madness by Penny Wong, what’s left? Answer, a political vacuum.

Southern Cross will be pro small business and luke-warm to globalisation, we will challenge global warming scammers, and give the people the right to choose their own direction instead of Governments telling us what is best for us then forcing us to comply.

We will ensure that Australia’s resources are not exploited to the point of seeing us losing our ability to value add, this will increase our trading opportunities and attract local and foreign investors to develop industry in Australia instead of taking it off shore, profit from the resources boom will help in building water infrastructure to make Australia the food bowl of the Asian Pacific Basin.
There is a lot of work to be done, save OUR Australia
Get behind Southern Cross NOW
