NSW Daily Telegraph: DOCS Royal Commission Petition

On another site I found a link to a petition purportedly sponsored by Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper. Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd Daily Telegraph sponsorship statement says: "The Daily Telegraph is the voice of the people of NSW. It seeks to improve life in our state by being an active participant in debates that affect readers"

IMO the text of the petition sponsored by the Daily Telegraph (and copied below) does not appear to be in the prescribed form and may therefore be deemed unacceptable by the NSW Government. The petition will consequently and likely be refused to be tabled on one or more technicalities, a ploy generally employed by governments to prevent potentially (politically) embarrassing and damaging matters to be heard by Parliament and citizens.

NSW rules relating to petitions state: "It is the responsibility of the member presenting a petition to ensure that the petition complies with the standing orders and rules of the House (SO 70(3)). While there is no requirement that a petition be submitted to the Clerk before being presented to the House, it is customary for members to do so in order to ensure that the petition is in order as petitions have been ruled out of order after being presented to the House. Where a petition does not comply with the standing orders there is precedent for members to seek the consent of the House to present it as an ‘irregular petition’."

Even if all other requirements for petitioning the NSW Government are met, this petition may further likely fail because a majority of current signatories HAVE NOT SIGNED using their FULL NAME as prescribed in the rules.

TEXT OF DAILY TELEGRAPH PETITION:

"Today The Daily Telegraph takes a stand on behalf of all children whose lives are being put at risk by the inaction of the NSW Department of Community Services.

We are calling for a Royal Commission into the organisation in a bid to finally end the shameful legacy that has resulted in one child known to DOCS dying every three days.

Join our campaign to protect the most vulnerable in our community by adding your name to our petition.

Together we can force the Iemma Government to address DOCs' incompetence.

The Daily Telegraph "
